In December 2023, I had the privilege of delivering a keynote online at the 7 Experiences Summit, the annual gathering of the Experience Research Society, hosted by Auckland University of Technology. This event brought together leading scholars, practitioners, and innovators from across the globe to explore the frontiers of experience research.

In my keynote, “Transformative Experiences: A Cross-Disciplinary Perspective”, I explored the art and science of transformation — asking the key question:

“How might we use experience design to create a positive contribution to a sustainable future?”

Drawing from positive psychology – the science of awe, post-traumatic growth, and post-ecstatic growth, I shared a synthesis of insights from multiple disciplines, weaving them together into a framework for intentionally creating experiences that catalyse lasting change. I also presented my latest research in tourism, events, and hospitality, highlighting concrete examples of how transformation can be designed, guided, and integrated over time.

As I reflected during the talk:

“If we can understand the triggers, conditions, and integration processes of transformation, we can move from accidental moments to intentionally designed experiences that help both people and the planet flourish.”

The conversations sparked at the 7XSummit reaffirmed that experiences as one one of the most powerful tools for shaping a more meaningful, regenerative, and sustainable future — if we choose to design with purpose.
